Paytm has introduced a new feature that allows users to make UPI payments without needing an Indian SIM card. This update aims to make digital payments easier for NRIs (Non-Resident Indians), international students, and travellers who want to use UPI while abroad.
With this feature, Paytm users can link their NRE (Non-Resident External) or NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) bank accounts to UPI and complete payments even if they don’t have an Indian mobile number.
Earlier, using UPI required an active Indian SIM card linked to the bank account. This restriction made it difficult for Indians living overseas to use UPI for domestic transactions or while visiting India.
Now, users in select countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and the UAE can make payments directly through the Paytm app without inserting an Indian SIM.
Paytm said this feature was developed in line with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) guidelines to expand UPI accessibility to NRIs.
This move is expected to help Indian expats and travellers make seamless payments across millions of merchants who accept UPI.
