Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes that within the next 20 years, data centres will move to outer space to reduce Earth’s energy consumption and environmental burden. Speaking at Blue Origin’s annual space conference, Bezos said his long-term vision is to shift heavy industries — including cloud computing — off Earth.
Bezos explained that space offers unlimited solar energy, which can power massive data storage and processing facilities. He said that as AI, cloud computing, and digital data usage continue to rise, Earth may not be able to handle the growing energy demand sustainably.
“In the coming decades, much of our energy-hungry infrastructure — including data centres — will operate in space,” Bezos said.
This idea ties directly to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s largest cloud service provider. AWS already provides cloud solutions for space agencies like NASA and private firms like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
While the concept sounds futuristic, Bezos said the technology and commercial interest are progressing fast enough to make this vision a reality within two decades.
